Chapter Eight: The Maze Of Madness

“And so, as a Level 1 Conjurer – Level 2 overall! – I get a new feat,” Lucy explained to Moddie and Flit as the three of them entered New Camp’s sprawling cave base. Several people glanced up before returning to their work: repairing weapons and clothing, growing mushrooms, turning mushrooms into alcohol...

Lucy turned backwards, speaking to the two girls. “So, right now, Boogle.” She nodded to her shapeshifting buddy, who turned into a floating set of glowing letters that spelled out the name Boogle in flashing lights beside her head. “Boogle!” Lucy snapped her fingers and made both hands into finger guns. “Boogle here has the ability Virtue of Command, remember? Gives me two class level abilities for free? Well, he can only do that to one class. And I had to choose: do I want to keep having Level 1, 2 and 3 for Soldier, or did I want Level 1 Soldier and then Level 1, 2 and 3 for Conjurer? Well, funny story!”

“Ahem.”

“Oh, hey Devros,” Lucy said, turning to face the tall, severe black man who served as the head of the New Camp. “Just a sec, gotta explain this to my friends.” She turned back. “Long story short, those two levels of Soldier get me extra damage resistance – eh – and another feat. Buuut since I just got a feat for hitting Level 2, I can take the feat I used to get from Soldier, and shift my levels to Conjurer, which gives me another feat called Favored Gear for my rapier, which makes it even deadlier and more accurate and I get access to Level 0, 1 and 2 spells.”

She beamed brightly.

“Oh, except the Level 2 spells have to be Conjuration spells. Since, like, I’m a specialist wizard and all that,” she said.

Devros frowned, slightly. “Do, at any point, you need to learn the most important part of being a wizard?” we asked, archly.

“Which part?” Lucy asked.

“When to cast a spell,” he said, shaking his head.

“Oh fuck no, RPGs are the worst for that,” Lucy said. “Half the time, they actively encourage you to make mistakes. Hubris is an actual stat in Mage: The Awakening. You get XP for losing it!”

Devros’ lips pursed, then his cool eyes traveled from Lucy to Flit and Moddie. “I see you’ve collected at least one new soul for our unfortunate camp.”

“This is Flit Dangerous, space adventurer!” Lucy said, cheerfully. “Flit, you go get a shower. Moddie, you scrub her back all homoerotically. Devros, I got me an idol!” She reached into her belt pouch, then held up the idol, waggling it from side to side. “We just had to fight a bunch of goons and run away from a big hellfire orb.”

“Very good,” Devros said. “And what about him?”

Lucy turned back to see Diego was kicking his way free of the underbrush. His back still smoked slightly and he threw his arms wide. “Thanks for the help!”

“Oh, right, also, I found Diego!” she said, cheerfully.
